MENORCAN GASTRONOMY


Menorcan cuisine is simple spiced, while tasty, fresh by using natural products, which are obtained from the sea or cultivated in our land. The sea provides a wide variety of fish and shellfish.
Typical meals

“Caldereta” (Lobster soup) is one of the most prized dishes as well as various fish such as mullet, Cap Roig made the oven with potatoes, salt, or to simply grilled; squids, octopuses and cuttlefish cooked in many ways: stuffed, baked with onions, etc... The prawns and shellfish are of excellent quality, as escupin or dates with those prepared with rice or noodles, they are typical fishermen meals.

As for meat, are prepared and baked or in casseroles: beef, pork, lamb, quail, and so on. There are dishes to taste as original as the rabbit with almonds sauce, the quail with cabbage, loin with pepper or meatballs with tomato or almond sauce.

Cheese - Queso Mahón – Menorca
Pressed cheese, not cooked, so parallelepiped and rounded edges, produced on the island from cow’s milk, curd at a low temperature, salted and cured by immersion according to the customs of the island. Its design responds to ancestral traditions, one of the pillars underlying part of the history and culinary and livestock tradition of Menorca.

Sausages

The sobrassada is a raw cured sausage, made from pork meat and bacon and mixed with paprika, spicy pepper and salt.
In Menorca the sobrassada is marketed in different varieties, tender and cured. The tender sobrassada is embedded in a small intestine and is presented in a cylinder. Its flavor is smooth and balanced and presents a vivid red. The pieces are sold from 5-6 days. The cured sobrassada is embedded in a bigger intestine and needs a 4 months of healing before being marketed. Its taste is more intense and presents a darker red color.

Carn i xulla is a raw cured sausage, traditional and typical of the island. This product is made with lean meat and minced pork bacon, seasoned with salt and spices and embedded in intestines.
This sausage is perhaps the oldest of the island and its origin dates back possibly to the ancient Roman gastronomical culture.

Menorcan land wines

Wines with geographical identification Illa de Menorca. These are wines made with the white varieties, Chardonnay, Macabeo, Malvasia, Muscat, Parellada and Moll, and the red varieties Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot, Monestrell, Syrah and Tempranillo.

There is no doub of the quality and reputation of wine from Menorca. There are many references to this ancient wine, but one of the most significant was the occasion in the pact of allegiance in the year 1231, in which the Muslim authorities gave wine to the ambassadors of King James I.
